Dr Ellen Hodnett is Professor and Heather M. Reisman Chair in Perinatal Nursing Research in the Faculty of Nursing, University of Toronto. The Reisman Chair, which Dr. Hodnett has held since its inauguration in 1996, was the first endowed chair in nursing research in Canada. Since 1996 she has been an Editor for the Pregnancy and Childbirth Group of the Cochrane Collaboration, responsible for both writing and editing systematic reviews for the Cochrane Library. From 1999-2002, Dr. Hodnett was Chair of the Clinical Trials Grants Review Committee for the Canadian Institutes of Health; she was the first woman and the first non-physician to hold this position. Currently she chairs the Research Advisory Committee for the World Health Organization Program in Maternal and Reproductive Health Research in Geneva, Switzerland
Dr. Hodnett's research program focuses on rigorous evaluations of forms of care for childbearing women, usually through multi-center, randomized controlled trials. Dr. Hodnett was the principal investigator of the Nursing SCIL (“Supportive Care in Labor”) Trial, a large international study of nursing care for women during labour and birth, funded by the National Institutes of Health, published in 2002 in The Journal of the American Medical Association. She is also the principal investigator of the SELAN (“Structured Early Labour Assessment and Care by Nurses”) Trial, funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, that began on October 1, 2002.
Les intérêts de recherche de Dre Ellen Hodnett portent sur l’évaluation rigoureuse des formes de soins pour les femmes enceintes, le plus souvent par le biais d’essais cliniques multi-centriques. Dre Hodnett fut la chercheuse principale de l’étude « Nursing SCIL (Supportive Care in Labor) », une importante étude internationale sur les soins infirmiers apportés aux femmes pendant le travail et l’accouchement. Les résultats de cette étude, subventionnée par les IRSC, ont été publiés en 2002 dans « The Journal of the American Medical Association ». Elle est aussi chercheuse principale pour l’essai clinique SELAN (« Structured Early Labour Assessment and Care by Nurses », aussi financé par les IRSC, et qui a débuté en octobre 2002. Dre Ellen Hodnett est professeure et directrice « Heather M. Reisman » de la Recherche en nursing périnatal à la Faculté des sciences infirmières de l’Université de Toronto. Elle agit en outre à titre d’éditrice et de rédactrice pour le groupe Cochrane. Elle est présentement directrice du Comité consultatif sur la recherche pour le programme « Recherche en santé maternelle et reproductive » de l’Organisation mondiale de la santé, à Genève.
